If you type Ctrl-h t (that means Control-h and then t) you are into
the emacs tutorial. I seem to remember finding that useful when I
started! It does take a bit of getting used to but is really worth
it.
Modern emacses now come with lots of menus so that you can do the dort
of thing you need by pointing and clicking. Which reall afficionados
will no doubt disapprove of... but the menus should also show you the
key combinations so you can learn that way.
Ctrl-h a "apropos" gives you names of commands you half-remember.
I could go on and on but...
