Well it wasn't the cause of the particular bounce in question.
After Paul had asked whether I was using freeserve's SMTP relay,
I rechecked all the logs and realised that the error message
came from an (e)smtp session between freeserve's relay and
the destination machine. My machine wasn't involved by that
stage.
A smaller message got through ok, and, after they had cleared
out old mail, the larger message was re-sent and seems to have
had no problems getting through.
There is actually a setting for postfix that can redefine the
helo message - rfcs 821 & 1123 have a few things to say about
this though. Here's one of them:
When HELO parameter validation fails, a suggested
procedure is to insert a note about the unknown
authenticity of the sender into the message header (e.g.,
in the "Received:" line).
I've seen lots of these, e.g. this evening a message came in:
> Received: from unknown (216.115.97.171)
> by m3.grp.snv.yahoo.com with QMQP; 13 Mar 2002 20:30:19 -0000
> Received: from unknown (HELO hotmail.com) (216.33.148.23)
> by mta3.grp.snv.yahoo.com with SMTP; 13 Mar 2002 20:30:19 -0000
