These problems are all occuring on production systems not using crypto
block devices. I tend to mostly use crypto at home and a few other places.

Which patches would those be? The magical ones that I'm not using? I'm
using stock Linus virgin kernels without any magical third party stuff.

This one falls over randomly, however as I have said, I am using crypto
patches on this box so there's a small possibilty that the (obviously vm
looking) problems at home are related to said patches.
apogee.jonmasters.org in Reading currently has crypto disabled but has
still had a few issues with 2.4.17 - mostly arbitrary kernel stalls.
