Avoid BT at all costs, aside from the initial installation. If you do go
with them then ask for an IPv6 address as part of their pilot or whatever
they call it - in that case they will give you a non-transient IP (I
believe that's what these types call it - it's not "static" it just never
changes...yes, I know :P). Freeserve are apparently ok (though I avoid
them because they once kicked me off their surftime for being one of the
"unreasonable" users - literally taking them at their word of 24x7
dialup). Then there's Zen, Demon and a few others of some merit. Everyone
tends to get really excited and point to http://sod.ms/ however A&As
prices are IMO a littly excessive, well they /were/ when I last looked. As
Carl mentions, "wires only" a la U$ style is now becomming popular over
here - at last! :-)
I personally have an account with Mailbox for apogee.jonmasters.org which
is in Reading and this costs about 53GBP per month or so. For this I get a
static IP with custom reverse DNS (which actually was one of the
determining factors in choosing them as a provider - not enough providers
will do this for you or have suitably non-broken dns scripts which can
allow them to do this even if they want to), very very competent support
staff who don't come and go like yoyos - I know the two people I will
end up talking to if I call tech support and Alex (one of them) is
also using GNU/Linux on his box at home (and they probably beat the
average demon tech support people from my experience - certainly their
network is more reliable, which admittedly means less now than it
once did). I have cable in Nottingham only because it was convienient at
the time - my dhcp client scripts email me any address changes affecting
the cable modem and these then get entered in to the jonmasters.org dns -
I'll get around to automating that when the IP starts changing more than
once in a blue moon/powercut/whatever - or when I next feel like
putting off doing other work through such procrastination.
Jon.
