My last two cents on this issue... for now, anyway.

Me too. I knew it would probably not be news to anyone in the LUG when
I posted it, I just felt like I had to tell someone right away. It
freaked me out.

Extremely interesting but also morally terrifying. I also recommend
John Pilger's book 'The New Rulers of the World', although it's not for
the faint of heart. I struggled to get through it. Scary fucking stuff
in there.

Wait until online voting á la Microsoft gets started. Then we'll see
some fireworks.

Not in this lifetime, chuck. Plenty of other things that need funding
but are still getting fucked... I heard about this thing called NHS...

They can, that's the combined power of money and public ignorance at
work.

More likely to be monitors with built-in webcams first... of course,
it'll become law that all monitors HAVE to have built-in webcams.
They'll probably pass it off as a 'national security concern' or
something, to defend 'freedom' against 'terrorists'. I expect we'll see
a lot of that shit over the coming months and years.

Exactly, the trouble is, we've been being prepared for this for a long
time, so many essential parts of this police state plan are already in
place and it seems too late to turn back, unless the masses suddenly
snap out of their collective stupor. Linux and a free internet are
important because they are NOT part of the police state model.

I don't know. America's computing populace is probably more advanced
and clued up than ours. Microsoft could take us easier than it could
take the US.

True, but I believe Graeme was talking about people like Adobe and
Macromedia etc. The trouble is, if Micro$hit and Intel get Palladium
working and the masses lap it up in their brand spanking new PCs, those
third parties will have no choice but to fall in line if they want to
stay in business. Otherwise their customer base would just be too small.

It's even scarier to observe that the majority of human beings now find
it hard to exist away from some form of retail experience or home
electrical entertainment equipment. People have simply forgotten what
to do with their time anymore. They spend most of it working, and when
they're not working they want to put the money they've earned to use so
that they feel better about wasting their lives in a job... so they buy
stuff. Then what? They need to kill some time between shopping and
work, so they buy home entertainment stuff and PCs. The corporations
have it all stitched up.

Not me, and not the people on this mailing list. We use Linux. And YES
we are morally superior!!

Yeah, I've spent the day trying to find beams of light in the
darkness... I thought one was that Apple bought Steinberg and shut down
it's Windoze division, but even if - and it's a big 'if' - Apple emerges
as a big player in terms of market shares, they'll be the ones who'll
come under pressure from people like the RIAA and MPAA to introduce
fascist measures to clamp down on copyright violations. That's what
happened to Microsoft, under threat of destruction by Hollwood and the
music industry. The powerful press on the less powerful, who press on
the lesser powerful and so on, so eventually they're pressing on us, the
people, and then we're all working for the same man.

Think Debian! ;-) Not that I know sod all about it, but apparently
.debs are supposed to be pretty good...

But the motion picture industry didn't want VHS or BetaMAX to win...
this time they are 100% behind Microsoft and more specifically Palladium.

It should be clear to any thinking person that we are living at a
crucial juncture in history (sorry, I'm getting all essay-style on you
here, I hope you don't mind... just got back from university). This is
a turning point, at which the future of society - of humanity - will be
decided, and it will go down one of two paths: the path of repression,
restriction, consolidated power and fascism, or the path of
decentralization, autonomy, creativity, freedom and justice. Right now
freedom and justice are taking a fucking beating, and I mean it's BAD.
I read about new and horrific things that are being done to the common
man every single day, all over the world. But there are gleams of hope
if you look hard enough, and one of them is Linux. Nobody should ever
underestimate the significance of what they are doing when they use
Linux or a piece of Open Source software. But now even Open Source is
under threat, and I think an important issue that needs to be addressed
as soon as possible is WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
