I tend to have lists like that just append to a file, and just scan
occasionally for interesting topics with vi, and maybe egrep. Better still
is an email to news gateway for that kind of thing.

Not sure why, but mail lists seem to have gained ground over USEnet in last 8
years, I don't understand why, as it's in many ways less convenient.
