There's actually some really clever ideas in this area, the main one being
that if you can shape a light wave to be self focusing, it doesn't disperse
it's energy as much as a normal wave as it travels. You can then get two
of these waves to collide, and they bounce off each other just like
billiard balls. The idea is therefore you could create a laser network
switch, where you actually would have packet /collisions/ (although
silent) and all of the routing would be done by simple geometry within
the box bouncing all the packets to the right ports.
It'll probably never work/come to be etc.
