Maplin sells things like this.
A 2x16 character serial module is £30. But, to use it with a PC you'll
also need to buy a "magic cable" for ~£10. The module itself is a
standard Hitachi type LCD panel with a mini daughterboard which talks
serial at 2400/9600bps (it's a PIC chip that they charge you £20 for).
It shoves out TTL level signals which are the wrong voltage and opposite
logic of RS232. The cable fixes this, or you can bodge it yourself with
a MAX232.
