A bunch of friends (and ex-colleagues at Loughborough Uni) made up an
el-cheapo high gain 802.11b directional antenna from a plastic dogbowl, a
length of drainpipe and some reasonably heavy gauge copper wire. I don't
remember the specific results, but I do remember that they got about 1km
(or even slightly more) at a very good dB gain, with surprising results.
The whole shebang cost about four quid.

Hmm... this would be a plan to share someone's connection, right? I
suspect you'd find yerself in breach of contract if you did that. I
remember (vaguely, it is only 0730!) someone being taken to court by NTL
for grabbing a single connection in a small student block of flats, then
wiring the block. As they were in effect all separate properties, the
cable co. weren't happy at all...
Still, a 2Mb leased line doesn't cost too much these days. If enough
people clubbed together you could do what you wanted ;-)
Of course, there's always this:

Anyone fancy moving to Sweden?
