I find apt-get fast and efficient; you can simply run :

apt-get update
to update the database of packages, and then :
apt-get upgrade
to turn your system into the "latest" version of the secure distro.

It's very simple, and hasn't failed me on any "simple" upgrade.

The only time it stumbled was when the locales settings stumbled on an
upgrade between Debian potato to Debian Wooody.. easilly fixed by coming
in from a remote machine and I've been told that it's stumbled migrating
apache to a newer version, although that probably depends on how much you
modify the config.
