I'm running SuSE 7.1 on a 30Gig drive using Resierfsm I partitioned this
manually using the YAST2 installer, piece of cake really. With SuSE you get
Staroffice and Gimp so it answers all your questions.

7.1 drives my Epson Photo 750 through USB with no problem either with the
2.2.18 or 2.4 Kernel.

If you are on a shoestring, I could make copies of the SusE CDs, 7 in total.
