I've had the service for a year now and on the whole it is pretty good, just
make sure you have a record of the MAC address of the first NIC you connect
to the cable modem as it will remember this and only talk to this in the
future. I've been given a number of ways to clear the MAC address stored but
none have worked for me. I have an old 3COM cable modem that is now
discontinued, maybe the newer Motorola modems do not suffer from this
feature.

There is a rumour going round that the new Digital TV boxes NTL provide have
an Ethernet port on the back and that in the future this can be used instead
of an additional modem. One of these days I will upgrade our analogue box to
digital, but I spend more time in front of the PC than the TV so it's not a
high priority.

I have a Linksys router with NAT, port filter, DHCP server and 10/100 4-port
switch this cost me ?150 from PC World 6 months ago, it works a treat
although an old 486 and a copy of Freesco (www.freesco.org) would work just
as well and cost a lot less. I've configured Freesco on the upmarket ADSL
service for a local charity and it was a dream to setup.

By the way, one and all, I've been lurking on this list for a few months, I
don't seem to have found time to introduce myself up to now. I run a small
network at home with mixed Linux (SuSE on X86 and SPARC) and Windows 2000
boxen to support 5 demanding, IT literate, family members of which I am the
only male, do I hear a murmur of sympathy?

I will try and get to the next meeting either pub or in Lenton. If anyone is
thinking of arranging meetings I'm OK most evenings except Tuesdays.
