Indeed he did have a protocol mismatch - the reason I replied in private
with details to Sean is that the webspace in question is where we both
work :)
For info:
OpenSSH is capable of both SSH1 and SSH2. By default, it uses SSH1 and
falls back to SSH2 if not available. The server is running SSH2 (as Sean
pointed out) but does *not* have SSH1 installed... however nobody
commented out the fallback SSH1 line in the sshd2_config file - hence the
connection died as it tried to load the ssh1 daemon and failed.
When this happens, try using the -2 switch to OpenSSH to force version 2.
