Thanks for that Andy.
Built and installed xchat. I tried it briefly but the only
person on irc.openprojects.net #nottingham (jcm_e-gh) was
asleep. I'll try again later. The gui is going to take a
while to configure and get familiar. I don't have a working
whois command yet and am not clear about dcc - does this
expose my filesystem to the outside world?

OK, I'm not offerring any services via xinetd, I dont have an irc server,
merely a client, but again, what about this DCC thingy?
The only request that came in while I was online was the obligatory
"netbios-ssn connection (SYN) attempt" that some nerd always hits me
with. But its best to be prepared before the junk arrives.

That was totally lost on me I'm afraid. What's irc andyd_ ?
Using xchat, I had to clickety through a gui, with little
windows popping up all over the place, some without any
sort of "remove" button, to get things working.
Is anyone likely to be online this evening with enough patience
to help a newcomer to all this technology?
Ted.
