Ted, RH has a 'value added' feature called kudzu that does the kind of
auto-probe for new devices that install programs and Win do. If it detects
changes, it offers to create or remove devices, and will tinker with some
systems files as well as mknod's for devices.

It can take quite a long time to run on slower systems, though it is handy
when installing new network cards etc. as it will often do the right thing,
and get modules.conf and modprobe run.

Of course if it does the wrong thing...
