Correct me if I'm wrong but don't I remember Apple coming out with
postscript for one of their early printers (applewriterII or
something). It gained some popularity as an open standard amongst high
end users and Unix but only broke into the mainstream when Adobe added
compression and hyper-links and re-released it as pdf (proprietary).
Almost all Unix systems use postscript for printing if not document
distribution but pdf is still less widely used.
