Found an article on sound editting, using snd, the first page compares
feature set with Cool Edit which is apparently the Win standard.

It would appear to be the package of choice, although apparently it's
flexibility and wide choice of formats supported (including lisp programming
for processing), makes it more daunting for the new user. Sounds like a
familiar story :)
