Here are some commands you could try to see what is going on:
w, top, ps, fuser, vmstat, netstat.
Have a look at their man pages and note down some useful flags to
call them with, ready for the next time it happens.

Here are some questions to keep in mind:

Are you running short of ram - is the virtual memory system thrashing
the disks - are you even running low in swap space? Use vmstat.
Maybe you are running something like netscape that can grow
  ridiculously big.

Do you use leafnode/fetchnews to download usenet news?
Leafnode may be scanning large directories in the /var/spool/news
area while fetchnews downloads new news. Use top to see what
  program(s) are currently active.

Some other machine on the net may be scanning you and your firewall
or inetd may be busy logging lots of access denied/rejected messages.
I don't know the Suse distribution, but check your system logs in
/var/log/messages or wherever /etc/syslog.conf directs them.
Check your logs anyway - they may well give some clues.
Maybe one of your daemons (pppd?) has been configured to be a bit
noisy. E.g. are you logging lots of lcp echo "keep-alive" packets?

Have you visited the Suze security updates web pages recently?
