A trip together could help to meld us into a stronger group,
and I doubt anyone will object to free passes riding on the
back of your stall. What are you exhibiting?
But I dont see a strong enough group to put on a Nottm LUG
stand yet. Mind you its not till September is it? Much can
happen in four months (e.g. student final year projects).
It would be good for us to find a Nottm LUG project.
If we put together a stand, what would we like to display?
Any proposals?
Security seems a hot topic - can we build a display about
the range of defences already available specifically for linux
against {h|c}rackers? Or even better, can we develop one of
these a bit further between now and September?
> The LUG...
Well its no more and no less than those that participate in
it. At present there's so few active members that it doesnt
seem worth appointing administrators. I do feel we need some
sort of structure though - if only to focus things a bit.
I thought Godfrey's idea of regular (say monthly) meetings
looked promising, but I've been unable to get to two out of
the three and I gather that not many others made it to the
last one either. Is this a date/time/place problem or because
we are still so few? I wondered whether the students at either
of Nottm's Unis were interested in Linux sufficiently to take
over our group (think: hmmmmm - Student Union funds/facilities!),
although they are only active for 8 or 9 months in the year.
For benefit of newcomers, the structure so far consists of
1. Mailing list under nottingham@lists.lug.org.uk (unmoderated).
Archived by Simon Amor at http://shoe.bocks.com/nlug/.
Slowly taking off under its own steam now.
2. Web page at www.nottingham.lug.org.uk started by Godfrey
Not much there yet - open to offers/suggestions.
Hopefully to be updated real soon now!
3. Formal meetings (3 so far) organised by Godfrey.
Agenda/organisation open to suggestions/offers, but not well
supported yet. Announced via mailing list.
4. Online chat set up by Jon Masters?
#nottingham - irc.openprojects.net - port 6667?
(I'm not familiar with this, just quoting others).
Apparently not much used yet.
5. Informal pub meetup - 5 at first one, last week.
Arranged via mailing list.
We seem to be open to new initiatives when they sprout.
We could appoint an inner circle of do-ers to make suggestions
happen, but I suspect we're better off allowing anarchy to reign
until we're a bigger group.
> The web Site?
As a seeker of content rather than punter for presentations,
I boggle at ...
> you can detect the browser and redirect as appropriate, ...
What for?
Do we have a conflict between pushers and punters of web pages?
I hope we go for the lowest requirements of punter resources in
which to offer our content rather than making excessive demands
to capture the screen/machine/identity of anyone who dares to
touch our pages.
So unless we actualy *need* html frames, cookies, special fonts,
javascripts, ..., why require them in our web pages?
We certainly need to update the date of next meeting from December!
Perhaps we could add links to members, chat-room, mail-list, too.
We might like to add group photos, brief resumees of past meetings,
and results of Nottm LUG projects, when they are available, too.
But I for one would hate a web page that didnt work unless I could
display a real-time movie of Nottm LUG setting up its stand at the
next expo, or whatever. Sure we can offer such stuff to anyone who
wants to see it, but not as a requirement for accessing our pages.
Well that's my view anyway!
Waadyall rekon?
> Come join me on the BlueBus
??? Please explain Jason. What happens there?
I knew some poeple who sold a good cup of tea from the Blue Bus
at festivals in bygone years. Are you offering a cuppa?
