I do not want to be given one main route in to my applications, I want

No, you have missed the key point that it is not customisable as a UI -
you are given the "Task Bar" and "Start Button" and that's all there is
to it - if you don't like them then there is little you can do to change
it. They claim that their new "Windows Media Player OS" will change
this...yeah, right.
